Frequently Asked Questions

How frequently does my Chimney or Flue need to be swept?

At least once a year. In some cases more frequent sweeping will be required which is due to a number of factors including: Type of fuel, type of appliance, duration of use, moisture content of wood fuel burnt, type of Chimney/Cowl.

During my visit i will be able to see first hand how your burning cycle has been going. Then, delve into the best fuels to burn and improvements able to be made to increase the appliances efficiency and therefore heat output.

What does ‘correctly seasoned wood’ mean?

Wood burnt in your wood burning/multi-fuel stoves should have a moisture content of 20% or less. Anything more causes more smoke and therefore carbon deposit build ups in your Chimney or Flue causing more problems. Manufacturers recommend a moisture content of 20% or less.

DOES sweeping MAKE A MESS?

NO! I carry the correct kit and equipment and set up in a way that seals off the chimney or fireplace stopping any Soot or Debris from falling down into your clean living quarters. I pride myself on providing a professional and CLEAN service!

HOW DO I PREPARE FOR A SWEEP?

You don’t! I carry all the necessary Floor Matts and Dust sheets to protect your home. All I ask is your Stove is not used the day before the sweep to allow the appliance to cool down for safe servicing and access to the chimney. I also ask that there is clear passage to the Stove and a clear working area around it.

DO I NEED TO HAVE MY GAS or OIL FLUES SWEPT?

Yes! Burning these types of fuels does not build Soot Deposits as fast as burning solid fuels but they do develop none the less. There are numerous other problems which can affect the chimneys integrity and sweeping can solve or at minimum identify these problems.

I've just moved into a house with a fire place, should I get it checked?

Yes, you should always have it Inspected and Swept to check the integrity of the Chimney or Flue, to check for Birds Nests or any other obstructions and to make sure your chimney is clean and ready for use. This will prevent chimney fires.

Do i need my chimney or flue swept for insurance purposes?

Yes, in the event of a chimney fire or a fire related to your heating system that hasn’t had its minimum annual sweep your insurance will not cover you. This also applies to Landlords, making sure they are up to date with property compliancy.
